USM-PRO™ 'Blueshift' extended range 7-string guitar will be featured at the Fishman booth, NAMM Show, January 2018. To the left of the reception area, a soundproof glass wall encloses the live performance stage. Classic amplifiers from Fender, EVH, Marshall crowd the backline, along with Fishman's iconic Loudbox acoustic guitar combo and SA-Series PA. Larry Fishman and I occupied deep black leather chairs in the semi-darkness, watching and listening intently as Ken Susi, and Rob Ketch (Vice President of OEM Sales) put Fathom 7-string and Fluence-equipped Les Pauls & Jacksons through their paces on the brightly lit stage. Larry had just finished showing me the stacked circuit boards which form the core…

The 4 Best Cheap Guitar Cabinets – Budget Reviews 2017

All
Photo by Thomas Hawk / CC BY So why get a guitar cabinet? Well, adding an extension cabinet to your rig is a great way to expand your sound without having to invest in a larger amp. It’s certainly the most cost-effective option for players on a budget. Guitar cabinets have benefits over a larger amp beyond your wallet too. They’re a lot more portable, for one thing, and give you more on-stage configuration options. Guitar cabinets also give you the option of taking a modular approach to your sound, letting you more easily customize it for different settings and situations. If you’re in the market for an extension cabinet that’s cheap but doesn’t sound like it, any of the choices below are worth your consideration. These are our recommendations…

Guest Post: Walrus Audio RED High-Gain Distortion Pedal Review

All
Ah, Walrus Audio. These fine gents from Oklahoma are making some of the coolest little pedals on the market today. My first run-in with Walrus was at Winter NAMM 2014, where they had just announced the upcoming release of their Descent Reverb pedal, which turned into a must-own item for my pedal board. Fast forward to Winter NAMM 2017 where I spied this cool little box called the RED High-Gain Distortion pedal. I couldn’t wait to get my hands on it! One of the coolest parts about Walrus is their awesome pedal housing designs and the RED is no different. According to their website, the “original artwork features a scientist looking into a microscope discovering the virus that is, The RED.” In a world saturated with pedals and boutique pedal…

The 4 Best Bass Strings for Slap and Pop – Reviews 2017

All
Photo by Ryan Leong / CC BY So why get bass strings for slap and pop? Well, the bass guitar, although often considered to be a simple instrument, is actually full of nuances. When it comes to playing styles, none is more dynamic than slapping. In order to get that trademark sound, you will need a decent set of strings. In a way, it has much more to do with your selection of strings than it does with your guitar. Today, we are going to show you what we think are some great strings for slapping. The main criteria we have used for this list is string’s ability to retain that snappy tone. After all, that is what gives slapping the edge. Below are our recommendations for the 4 best…

There are a bazillion Christmas songs out there, but what about Christmas blues guitar songs from real blues guitar legends? You don’t hear them much, but they are definitely out there. Say “No” to horrible guitar gifts for Christmas! Christmas ideas for the guitarist you know!

All
Okay.. it’s that time of year where I’m providing a Public Service Announcement to your friends and family. As a guitarist.. or musician for that matter, it can be hard to purchase gifts for you. Everyone knows you’re a musician and want to get you something relating to your passion. But that passion is very personal – where friends and family might not know exactly what you’re into.. and often, those things you *really* want are way out of peoples’ budgets. So what often happens is you get cheesy gifts relating to your craft. Here comes the guitar ties, the guitar sweaters, etc. Those are nice, and the thought does count, but are utterly useless. If you know what I’m talking about, you might want to share this post in…

Electro-Harmonix OpAmp Big Muff Reissue Preorder

All
Last month I talked about the upcoming Electro-Harmonix OpAmp reissue that inspired the tunes on Billy Corgan’s Smashing Pumpkins Siamese Dream album. That super thick and textured guitar tone is super signature and associated as the ‘pumpkins’ sound. Behind that sound there are a few pieces, but on piece is a special Big Muff – the Op Amp version. If you know anything about Big Muffs, you know there are a ton of variations. Just to mention a few – Triangle Muff, Rams Head Muff, NYC Muff, Russian Muff, etc. Within these muffs, it’s about the guts. Small variations to components or circuit design provide their signature tone. The version that is often overlooked is the Op Amp version. This is the muff you want for the Pumpkins tone. So…
